Music Adaptation Plans (MAPs)

Adaptive music education remains a developing field, and many music teachers seek to be inclusive but are unsure where to begin when working with students with physical disabilities. Instruments vary widely, students’ bodies vary widely, and there is no single formula that works for everyone. This is where Music Adaptation Plans (MAPs) have proven to be valuable.

Developed by Dr. Deborah Amend, MAPs emerged from instruction at the Cincinnati Adaptive Music Camp, where students with significant physical disabilities studied piano, strings, brass, or guitar over several years. To support instruction, teachers documented how each student played, the adaptations required, and which strategies were most effective. Over time, patterns emerged that clarified and made adaptive instruction more manageable for teachers.
